Social Media

Social media has become an important aspect of adolescents’ lives. This theoretical review provides a developmental–sociocultural framework for the role of social media in adolescent girls’ body image concerns, and in turn, depressive symptoms and disordered eating. We propose that the features of social media like (idealized images of peers, quantifiable feedback) intersect with adolescent developmental factors like salience of peer relationships and sociocultural gender socialization processes societal over-emphasis on girls and women’s physical appearance to create the “perfect storm” for exacerbating girls body image concerns. We argue that, ultimately, body image concerns may be a key mechanism underlying associations between adolescent girls social media use.

A new study reveals that influencers have great sway on consumers, and brands using them to share messages about their products can keep their audience’s attention. They win with customer purchases. Their reach is greatest when passed along as mentions or retweets in public posts and on paid advertising channels such as Facebook and Instagram.

Social platforms were originally created as a way to connect and keep up with friends, but in recent years the role has shifted significantly to include many more users than were originally intended. According to a study by Sideqik, 83% of Facebook users say that social connection still remains their primary use for the platform. While less than 1/3 of the users across five major platforms say the same, these platforms are still integral to keeping us connected with one a

Social Media Influencers are an example of how the Internet can disrupt marketing trends. More people today are turning to social media platforms to find information than ever before and this directly impacts sales. Thereforee, it is not surprising to learn that the percentage of people actually known to a site user in real life changes dramatically from platform to platform. Here’s what the study shows among platform users:

We recognize the disproportionate influence of social media on how we share news and connect with each other. For example, we can’t imagine a world where people would get their news from TV networks only. But so much about how we share experiences has changed: We are less inclined to share personal connection with strangers on an individual basis, we gravitate towards platforms where our friends already gather (e.g., Instagram and Facebook), and we now expect brands to be more thoughtful about what they post on their own platforms than they were in the past.

People aren’t just consuming advertisements and brands, they’re experimenting with new ways to consume them. Social media has democratized this process by providing equal access to brands, who can now have conversations directly with viewers. These conversations are happening in real time and often take place across platforms that are saturated with content.

Impact of Influencers

When we talk about impact, this means a lot more than just following influencers. It means the power of influence is at the very core of your social strategy. In fact, Sideqik claims that 50% of millennials feel that they know the influencers they follow on social media better than their friends. As a result, 7 out of 10 consumers trust influencers’ recommendations just as much as the opinion of real-world friends. The impact they can have should not be ignored.

The influence of influencers is more important than ever. In fact, 72% say their trust in influencers has increased this year, and over a third (35%) say that influencers have influenced the purchase decisions they have made within the last month alone.

We’ve all seen the impact that influencers have on our shopping lives, but now we’re starting to understand why this is important. A study conducted by media agency group MEC and YouGov found that 95% of consumers look for authentic information about brands in key influencer channels; 82% say information published by important influencers (such as agencies, PR firms and celebrity owned blogs) influences their purchases of a product or service. For marketers who work with these channels, this trend presents great opportunity and challenge.

“The mass media of film, television, radio and internet have enabled a whole new degree of instant, global stardom for those of dubious talent. As a result, our society is drowning in a flood of celebrities, products of a fame industry of lavish scale.”-Stephen Cave.

The Interview with Lamia Fahmy

We conducted an interview with the well-known journalist, Lamia Fahmy Abdel-Hamid, the presenter of the "Kalam MN el alb" program on Al-Hayat channel, which is a program that discusses social and religious issues, and we took her opinion on the issue of influencers.

Q: If we want to attract young people to specific content, what should we do?

A: It is very important that we study the category that we are addressing because the world today is different from the time it was, and the thinking of young people is different from that time, in order to attract their attention to a specific category for the content we are presenting. How does their brain think, what are the things that attract them (media, social media, series, drama, songs) so that you can create content so you can attract them.

Q: What is your opinion on the phenomenon of TikTok, and if you use it, will it affect your work positively or negatively?

A: No, I don't like this phenomenon at all. Oh, it may be that some people download content on TikTok that is already there, like, for example, parts of my episodes are already available on the media and social media, but I don't deal with specific content for TikTok, and I don't like it at all. And I don't like people who are always interested in his videos and make songs and dance to them.

Q: How do you deal with any negative comment that comes to you, whether in an entry in the programme or on your personal page?

A: Look, there is no one who praises it all the time and adheres to it all the time. Sometimes there are some ridiculous comments, but I still understand that those who make a ridiculous comment will remain vain people who will continue to understand religion wrongly, seeing them as not being right and talking just for the sake of talking, but mostly I don’t respond to them. One of these things is pure ignorance.

Q: Do you see how social media affects and benefits a certain business?

A: Of course, social media has a huge influence because it is now the only way for people to communicate with one another, so it is a means for business and work and displaying it, whether it is in the media or not, or even for people who have brands that advertise them, because it is the only thing that everyone can follow. The simplest thing is that you hold your mobile phone, open what you want, and see everything that is there. Uh, of course it has a great impact now on all levels.

Q: Who do you see affecting social media, and do you cooperate with them? It is not necessary to mention names, but how does their content work?

A: Look, you won't find me following a lot of people, but you will find me following Islam Fawzi because he makes nice videos about things that may be spread on social media. There are no regrets, and they don't say anything that might offend modesty. Oh, but there are people who provide good content; there are people who talk, for example, about nutrition and fashion; there are people who provide good content on social media, and there are people who use it badly.
